Compass Box Whisky Glasgow Blend, Single Marrying Cask / 70cl
In his 1930s book ‘Whisky’, Aeneas MacDonald teaches us that Glaswegians historically preferred fuller bodied and more flavour-packed whiskies than people in other parts of the world. A hunderd years on and the smoky-peaty signature in Glasgow Blend has lost none of its power to captivate, underpinned by whiskies aged in Oloroso Sherry-seasoned casks full of fruitcake and spice-like character. So what better name for a whisky such as this?
But please don't take it too seriously. Because if there's something else Glaswegians are also famous for their wry sense of humour, which is why the city’s Wellington statue – traditionally dressed down with a traffic cone – is featured on the front label.
This unique bottling has been created specially from a single marrying cask used to mature the whisky after initial blending has taken place. Such seconadary maturation used to be commonplace within the world of Scotch but has become a lost art over the past 100 years.
This particular expression brings together malt whisky from Craigellachie and grain whisky from Cameronbridge, alongside helpings of whisky from Clynelish and Laphroaig, as well as a Highland malt blend. The blend was married in an ex-Clynelish American oak cask for 15 months before being bottled up at 49% ABV. Approachable but still deliciously complex, with familiar Clynelish waxy notes shining through, this one is most certainly superb!
