Crittenden Cri de Couer Savagnin / 2016 / 75cl
An almost willfully un-'commercial' wine. But when something tastes this good, what does it matter?
Defying convention and inspired by the great Vin Jaune wines of the Jura region in France, this wine was whole bunched pressed to old French barriques before natural fermentation and malolactic conversion. Following fermentation, the barrels were moved to a well ventilated shed (away from the winery proper) where conditions were perfect for the gradual growth of the flor yeast on the surface of the increasingly ullaged barrels.
Fabulous wine. Rich, full, warm, startling in its aromatics, flavours and length. Honey, sherry, brine, nuts and plenty more. Those flor characters are just beguiling. The dry stretched flattening wave of the finish: magical. The nose. It makes you want to dive into it head first. You have to be measured at 15.8% alc but this is the kind of wine you just want to sit beside all night, your arm casually posed to prevent anyone from taking it away. - Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front (95/100)
And if that's not enough this was also awarded another 95/100 by James Halliday
